While most people in Illinois recognize that hazards are faced in almost all circumstances, some may be unaware of the many dangers construction workers face. In addition to the heavy machinery used, many employees are working at great heights without the protection of windows, walls and floors to prevent them from falling. A recent out-of-state construction accident involving a fall recently proved fatal for a worker. The accident happened in early April. Reports indicate that the man was working with concrete on a building that was under construction. He was on the sixth floor of the building, or approximately 60 feet in the air. Hodson v. Taylor, a case from the Supreme Court of Nebraska, involved plaintiff who was injured in a lake accident. Plaintiff and group of friends were invited to lake house owned by the parents of a member of group. All members of the group were around 18 at the time of the accident. The family owned a pontoon boat, which the teens took out on the lake. The teens had each consumed several beers and would drive the boat to a location where they would jump into the water several times and swim around. Washington State L&I Cites Business After Worker’s Death
The death of an employee at one business in the Pacific Northwest has meant significant ramifications for one business owner. The Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) has cited an Everett company for multiple safety violations related to the death of a worker last July. Nineteen-year-old Bradley Hogue was killed by a rotating auger while working inside the hopper of a bark-blower truck at a Duvall home. Pacific Topsoils has been cited for two willful and 14 serious violations, with penalties totaling $199,000.
