The non-partisan Center for Budget and Policy Priorities reports this week that budget cuts have forced SSA to cut drastically services, and even impose a hiring freeze in 2011 in the face of increasing applications. This led to a deterioration in SSA phone service that the agency has only partially reversed. In 2016, the average caller to SSA’s 800 number can expect to spend over 15 minutes on hold, and nearly 10 percent of callers will receive busy signals. The cuts also affected SSA field offices, where people can apply for benefits, replace lost Social Security cards, or report name changes (due to a marriage or divorce, for example). On July 11, 2014, a worker at Lloyd Industries’ Montgomeryville (Pa.) plant suffered the amputation of three fingers after a machine without safety guards crushed his hand. The company, a leading manufacturer of fire dampers and HVAC products, fired him immediately after the incident. Four months later, OSHA received a safety complaint from the injured employee and the agency opened an inspection. On Nov. 18, 2014, five days after it began, company owner William P. Lloyd fired a worker he suspected to be a “rat” who had assisted the injured employee by providing him with pictures of the unguarded machine. With the weather getting a lot warmer and the days getting longer, more people will be taking to the outdoors for all kinds of fun activities. According to a recent news feature from the Press Herald, rescue workers have just recovered the body of a 14-year-old boy from a river in the New England area.
