California Motorcycle Awareness Month

CHP’s “Survive The Ride” Motorcycle Safety Campaign

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has recently issued a press release regarding their “Survive The Ride” motorcycle safety campaign. They are teaming up with the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to promote safety, education and increase awareness during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. In addition to more traditional safety and enforcement efforts, the CHP is going to participate in three major motorcycle events to promote and increase safety for riders across the state.

The Facts on Motorcycle Crashes in California

  • In 2013, motorcycle crashes resulted in 475 fatalities.
  • 13,143 people were injured in motorcycle crashes in 2013.
  • In 2012, 467 people were killed in motorcycle crashes.
  • There were 12,617 injured victims due to motorcycle wrecks in 2012.
  • Motorcyclists made up approximately 14 percent of all vehicle-related fatalities in 2013.

Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

California has one of the largest motorcyclist populations in the nation. There are more than 830,000 registered motorcycles and 1.4 million motorcycle riders. During the month of May, officials with the CHP will be on location promoting safety at the Bay Area Motorcycle Show in Alameda, the Motorcycle Night with the River Cats, Raley Field in Sacramento and at the West Coast Thunder Memorial Day Bike Run in Riverside. Additionally, the CHP will continue to operate California’s official motorcycle training program, which trains approximately 65,000 motorcyclists each year. Interested riders or prospective riders can find out how to register at www.californiamotorcyclist.com.

CHP’s Safety Reminders for Motorcyclists

  • Take a motorcycle safety course
  • Wear the proper safety gear, including a DOT-compliant helmet
  • Stay alert
  • Obey the speed limit
  • Ride defensively
  • Survive the Ride

After a Motorcycle Accident

Even seemingly minor motorcycle accidents at relatively low speeds can be devastating for riders. It doesn’t take much to send a motorcyclist to the hospital. In addition to pedestrians and cyclists, motorcycle riders are one of the most vulnerable roadway user groups on the road. Even with the proper safety equipment and DOT-compliant helmets, motorcyclists can be severely injured or worse when involved in accidents with larger passenger occupant vehicles.
